Bend 101: Building Community One Trail at a Time

Bend, Oregon, isn’t just known for its scenic beauty—it’s a place where outdoor adventure meets a deep sense of community and responsibility. That spirit came to life at the recent Bend 101 event on June 3 at Open Space Event Studios, themed “Connecting Through the Outdoors.” The evening invited residents—new and longtime—to explore their role in protecting the very land they love to explore.

Hosted by Brian Ladd of Cascade Hasson Sotheby’s International Realty, Bend 101 was born from a simple idea: buying a home is just the beginning. What follows is learning how to live well and responsibly in a place as special as Bend.

Each Bend 101 event begins with a grounding introduction to the city’s past and present, offering context for why stewardship is more vital than ever. With tourism booming, the community faces real challenges—from housing affordability and wildfire risk to strained infrastructure and land-use pressures. The message is clear: with access comes responsibility.

A powerful panel of local leaders deepened that message. Speakers included Zavier Borja from Visit Bend, Jeff Kitchens from public lands management, Rika Ayotte of the Deschutes Land Trust, historian Kelly Cannon-Miller, and City Manager Eric King. Together, they explored everything from trail etiquette and wildlife crossings to the delicate balance between growth and sustainability.

The conversation was honest, forward-thinking, and grounded in one core idea: community isn’t built by chance—it’s shaped by intention.

Bend 101 continues to be a vital platform for education, integration, and civic engagement—thanks to sponsors like OSU-Cascades, Deschutes Brewery, and other local partners.
